Waking up to droplets of condensation painting the window of our snug inn room was one of the loveliest memories from our impromptu stay in the Cotswolds. Slowly watching the world come to life on the high street, a trickle of the day’s tourists starting to drift in and out of the independent shops lining the hill, we stopped to take a moment to appreciate how lucky we were to be here.
After the tumultuous turn of events last week (a lost passport brings so much more heartache than expected), it was a relief to be somewhere making the most of these last three glorious days of annual leave. We meandered through the little boutiques, made stops for deliciously warming mulled wine, and of course, nestled in our ever-so-cosy room overlooking the bustling high street.
Charming, historic and full of characterful nooks, The Highway Inn proved to be the idyllic hideaway we were so in search of. Perched in the heart of the pretty Cotswold town of Burford, a not-so-hidden gem in beautiful Oxfordshire, the upscale pub with rooms made for a delightful winter getaway. Everything from the elegant wallpaper in the room to the hardwood floors and candlelit tables downstairs created the most enchanting of atmospheres.
Each room at the inn is gracefully adorned with tasteful touches and original features dating back to 1480. Below the creaky floorboards, an open fire crackles and flickers gently downstairs, creating a welcome respite from the biting chill outside. Some of my favourite moments were spent tucked away in the alcove by the bar with a glass of wine in hand or curled up reading on the chaise lounge chair in our guest room.
Slow, warming and quintessentially British, our staycation ended up being the cosy Cotswolds break I have always longed for. With a base as homely and comfortable as The Highway Inn, saying goodbye was not an easy task. Oh how I wish to be back in our toasty room with the murmur of foot traffic below and homemade breakfast awaiting…
