The leaves are yet to start turning brown but the recent dip in temperature has brought about a feeling of autumn approaching, and with that, an end to what has been an undeniably strange summer. Slow and relaxing it has been, yes, but also lacking in all the usual loveliness of summers: long evenings with a glass of rosé in hand, flights far and wide, and of course, my beloved yearly visits home to family in Poland.
We haven’t had many trips into Burley either this summer, so today felt particularly special. Hand in hand, we made our way past the same fields, cottages and animals we always do, knowing that the sandals on my feet were probably seeing their last outing for the year.
Being a bank holiday Sunday, the village was swamped with visitors around every corner but we managed to find a quiet spot to perch in on the terrace of our favourite local pub, The Burley Inn. Tucked away under a canopy of trees, we were able to observe all the village activity below and bask in the feeling of finally easing our way back to some normality.
On the walk home, I spotted a sprinkling of acorns on the ground and the first sign of autumn on its way. I’m looking forward to what the next season will bring, the change in nature around us, and hopefully a few more doorstep adventures to come.
