As soon as August arrives with its sprinkling of wildflowers, there’s only one way to celebrate this wonderful month. With summer in full swing, each year I make my way to the airport for my annual visit home: a few blissful days of relaxation, spending time with family, and recuperating away from everyday life in England.
Days here are slow paced and unhurried. I spend mornings picking fresh berries from the trees in my grandad’s garden and lounging in the hammock with a book. Midday, we dine outdoors underneath the shade with homegrown vegetables and soup providing energy for more lazing around. And when darkness starts to fall, we make our way indoors for cosy evenings in front of the telly.
Other days are a little more active, with trips to see extended family for plenty of catching up and reminiscing over more homemade meals. Almost always, there will be yummy baked treats awaiting, still warm from the oven. Cousins are invited to come stay with us and plans for the rest of our stay are discussed, each call more comforting than the last.
Life in Poland is different, especially in the countryside and the tiny town I come from. Yet time still passes by too quickly for my liking. Oh how I wish one day to spend the whole summer with nothing but the company of those closest, a big pile of Waterstones hardbacks and the sun warming my face.
