Taking it Slow This Autumn

Autumn is that beautiful time of year that is both magical but also often forgotten about outside of the blogosphere. The focus seems to be on the few days around Halloween and then all of a sudden it is the countdown to that specific time in December, the name of which I am trying very hard not to utter for another two weeks or so. I myself have been guilty of this in the past; only last year, I decided that as soon as November arrived, it was now winter and time for all things white and frosty. This year, however, I am trying to take it slow and embrace autumn for as long as possible. Perhaps it’s because the colder weather arrived much later this year, or because my journey to slowing down in life is taking me closer to my destination, but I have been in no rush to get through this wonderful season.

Some of my favourite moments this autumn have been those really minute ones that require us to slow down to even notice: waiting at the bus stop on campus at 7am, surrounded by fallen leaves, squirrels foraging and the crisp October air enveloping my body; watching the heat swirling up from a cup of tea while waiting for my morning pastry to bake in the oven; and driving when the day turns to dusk and the street lamps glow warmly, heating on full in the car. For me, autumn is that time of year when the warm weather starts slipping away from us gradually, when ordinary moments become beautiful and when there is something exciting around the corner. I’m not yet ready to give up on pumpkins, crunching leaves or the beautiful browns and oranges in our landscapes so I am holding on to the magic of autumn for just that little longer.
